Which October tasks in Virginia are you working on?
Though temperatures are dipping and evidence of our food or plants is literally disappearing from view, October is one of the busiest months in the garden from Zones 6-8.
What you do this month not only ensures you get to reap what you’ve sown, but your work now will go a long way toward succes next fall. Sooo…let’s do it!
Mulch it!

You can pull mulch back a bit and water a bit less, unless you’ve planted some new trees, shrubs or perennials (they will need watering once a day for two weeks or so)
Transplant

Dig and pot up plants you want to overwinter (you can cut back ferns and overwinter them in a garage or shed)
Cover or dig

Keep abreast of frost warnings and either cover things or dig/harvest fruit and vegetables.
Harvest time!!!

Harvest seeds for next year’s planting
A Time to Plant

Plant the rest of your fall vegetables, garlic and onions (into early November)
Choose Your Order

Order/buy shrubs, perennials and trees. Some of the best sources are found here: https://virginiaisforgardeners.com/seed-time-5-best-seed-catalogs-for-gardeners/
Planning plantings and purchases

Make a list of tools and pots or other supplies you need, and keep an eye out for sales on these items.
In closing
October is full of highs, lows, ups and downs. We start out the month wanting smoothies, and by Hallloween, most of us want hot soup and cider.
To me, October is the most beautiful month in Virginia, and though light is in short supply by October’s end, the cooler days and pleasant temperatures make it a colorful and rewarding time for most garden tasks.
If you hope to induct someone into your gardening gang, I purport there is no better month!
